Sauna Basics

Research from the University of Eastern Finland suggests that 4–7 sauna sessions per week provide the most significant cardiovascular benefits. However, even 2–3 sessions per week delivers measurable health improvements. For beginners, starting with 2–3 shorter sessions (10–15 minutes each) is recommended before building up duration and frequency.

Most health experts recommend sauna sessions of 15–20 minutes, followed by a cool-down period of equal length. Beginners should start with 10–12 minutes per session. Traditional Finnish sauna culture often involves multiple rounds of heat and cooling. The total heat exposure in one visit should generally not exceed 45–60 minutes. Always listen to your body and exit immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or extremely uncomfortable.

Traditional Finnish saunas typically range from 80°C to 100°C (176°F to 212°F) at bench level, with humidity between 10–20%. Steam rooms operate at lower temperatures (40–50°C) but with near 100% humidity. Infrared saunas operate at 45–65°C. Beginners should start at the lower end of these ranges and keep sessions to 10–15 minutes initially.

Traditional Finnish saunas heat the air to 80–100°C using a wood or electric stove, with optional steam from pouring water on hot stones. Infrared saunas use infrared light to heat the body directly at lower temperatures (45–65°C), penetrating deeper into tissues. Both offer health benefits; traditional saunas excel for the authentic cultural experience and cardiovascular conditioning, while infrared saunas may be more accessible for heat-sensitive individuals. Ideally both. Shower before entering the sauna to cleanse your skin — this allows your pores to open and sweat more freely. After your session, a cool or cold shower helps close your pores, rinse off sweat, and invigorate circulation. In traditional Finnish culture, jumping in a cold lake or rolling in snow after the sauna is a time-honoured practice with powerful physiological benefits.

Health & Safety

Regular sauna use has been associated with significant cardiovascular benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease, improved blood pressure regulation, and better arterial flexibility. It also supports mental health by reducing cortisol and promoting endorphin release, aids in muscle recovery, boosts immune function, and may help with chronic pain management. Explore the full science in our dedicated article.

Yes. Sauna use is generally not recommended for people with severe cardiovascular disease or recent heart attack, unstable angina, uncontrolled high blood pressure, pregnancy (particularly first trimester), or alcohol intoxication. People with certain skin conditions, multiple sclerosis, or who are taking specific medications should also consult a physician before regular sauna use. Always speak with your healthcare provider if you have any underlying health conditions.

While saunas do temporarily increase heart rate and calorie burn (approximately 150–300 calories per 30-minute session), most of the immediate weight loss after a sauna session is water weight, which is quickly replenished by drinking fluids. Sauna use can complement a weight management programme through improved cardiovascular fitness, stress reduction, and exercise recovery — but it is not a direct weight loss solution on its own.

Hydration is critical for a safe sauna experience. Drink at least 400–500ml of water in the hour before your session. During longer visits with multiple rounds, drink water between rounds. After your sauna session, drink at least 500ml–1 litre to replenish fluids lost through sweating. Avoid alcohol before or during sauna use, as it significantly increases dehydration risk and impairs your body's ability to regulate temperature.
